What's Happening in Sudan?

The Crisis in Brief

Since April 15, 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a brutal civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This conflict has created:

  • World's Worst Humanitarian Crisis: Over 30 million people need humanitarian assistance—more than half of Sudan's population
  • Genocide & War Crimes: The US State Department determined in January 2025 that the RSF committed genocide against ethnic minorities in Darfur
  • Largest Displacement Crisis: Over 12 million people displaced—8.8 million internally, 3.5 million fled as refugees
  • Spreading Famine: Famine declared in multiple regions, with 24 million facing acute food insecurity
  • Collapsed Healthcare: Over 70% of hospitals destroyed; cholera outbreak with 120,000+ cases

How Did This Start?

🔍 Evidence: UAE is Fueling This War

The United Arab Emirates has been extensively documented supplying weapons, drones, and financial support to the RSF—despite a UN arms embargo and despite UAE's repeated denials.

Advanced Weapons Supplied by UAE

Chinese-Made Guided Bombs (First Ever Combat Use): Amnesty International documented Chinese GB50A guided bombs manufactured in 2024 being used by RSF in Darfur. These bombs can only be dropped from Wing Loong II drones—which are only operated by RSF in Sudan and supplied by UAE.
Advanced Drones: US intelligence reported in October 2025 that UAE increased supply of Chinese-made Rainbow series drones capable of 24-hour flights, precision strikes, and long-range reconnaissance.
Nimr Armored Vehicles: UAE-manufactured Nimr APCs equipped with French Galix defense systems documented in RSF hands. Even UK-made engines (from Cummins Inc.) found in these vehicles.

Physical Evidence on the Ground

UAE Passports Found in Wreckage: In July 2024, four Emirati passports were recovered from a wrecked armored vehicle in Omdurman. Sudan claims they belonged to UAE intelligence officers.
Ammunition Boxes & Trucks: In October 2024, Sudan presented evidence to the UN Security Council including images of artillery ammunition boxes marked for UAE and Dubai-based trucks used for arms transport—all seized by Sudanese forces.
Bulgarian Mortars with Serial Numbers: 81mm mortar shells exported by Bulgaria to UAE in 2019 were found in an RSF convoy in Darfur with identical serial numbers. Bulgaria confirmed it never authorized re-export to Sudan.

Sanctioned Companies & Individuals

7 UAE Companies Sanctioned (January 2025)

  • Capital Tap Holding LLC - Provided RSF with money and weapons
  • AZ Gold & Jewellers LLC - Purchased gold from Sudan for RSF benefit
  • Creative Python LLC - Front company for RSF funds
  • Al Junaid Ltd. - Directly owned by Hemedti's family

Key Individuals:

  • Abu Dharr Habiballa - Controls Capital Tap network
  • Mazin Fadlalla - Purchased 200 Toyota trucks for RSF
  • Essa Al Marri - UAE national in multiple RSF-linked firms

UAE Military Bases in Sudan

  • Nyala, South Darfur: Supply and intelligence hub
  • Al-Malha, North Darfur: 200km from el-Fasher, used for supplies and intelligence
  • Bosaso, Somalia: Transit point for Colombian mercenaries, cargo flights, and supplies

📺 Media Coverage: The Sudan Blackout

Why coverage matters

Despite over 150,000 deaths and 11 million displaced, Sudan receives minimal mainstream media attention.

Important Note

Every human life has equal value, and all humanitarian crises deserve attention and action. This analysis is not intended to diminish the suffering in Ukraine, Gaza, or any other conflict. Rather, it aims to highlight the disproportionate lack of media coverage for Sudan's crisis—the world's largest displacement crisis—and to raise awareness so that those affected receive the international support they urgently need. All conflicts mentioned here are equally important and deserve comprehensive humanitarian responses.

Why the Silence?

Sudan's conflict has one of the highest death tolls of any current war, with 11 million displaced—more than Ukraine and Gaza combined. Yet it receives approximately 97% less media coverage than Gaza and 92% less than Ukraine. The war involves genocide, mass displacement, and documented international involvement—but remains largely invisible to Western audiences.

Death Toll Data:
  • Sudan: ACLED confirmed fatalities; estimates up to 150,000 including indirect deaths from London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine
  • Ukraine: Government and UN OHCHR civilian casualty data
  • Gaza: Gaza Health Ministry figures verified by UN, Dec 2024
Media Coverage Methodology:
  • Data Source: Media & Journalism Research Center (2025)
  • Outlets: NYT, BBC, CNN, The Guardian, Reuters, AP, etc.
  • Period: Calendar year 2024
  • Method: Average daily article count for substantive coverage
  • Additional: The Nation study on CNN/MSNBC shows similar disparities
Why These Conflicts:
  • Largest-scale active conflicts of 2024 by death toll/displacement
  • Comparable humanitarian impact and timeframe (2022–2024)
  • Illustrates patterns in Western media priorities
Important Limitations:
  • English-language focus; other regions differ
  • Article count ≠ coverage depth/prominence
  • Death toll methodologies vary; true numbers likely higher
  • Sudan data uncertain due to access and infrastructure collapse
The Human Cost of Media Silence
What happens when the world's largest humanitarian crisis goes unreported
25 Million People Need Aid

Half of Sudan's population requires humanitarian assistance. 20 million are at risk of famine—10x the population of Gaza.

Public Awareness Crisis

75% of Americans don’t understand the Sudan conflict; 77% of Britons unaware of UN’s famine warning.

How You Can Help

Limited coverage means less public pressure to act. Support Sudan by donating, sharing, contacting representatives, and staying informed.

💰 Blood Gold: How UAE-Based Networks Enable Conflict Financing

The Numbers

29 tons of gold imported directly from Sudan to UAE in 2024 (up 70% from 2023)

748 tons total from Africa in 2024—UAE is the world's top buyer of African gold

90% of Sudan's legal gold exports go to UAE

$1.6 billion in Sudanese exports to UAE in 2024 (91% was gold)

$13.4 billion estimated total value of smuggled gold

How the Smuggling Works

1. Extraction

RSF controls gold mines in Darfur, especially Jebel Amer mines. Gold is mined by forced labor in conflict zones. RSF produced 10+ tonnes in 2024 (~$860 million).

2. Smuggling Routes

Gold smuggled through Chad, Libya, South Sudan, and Egypt—all serve as "exit points" for RSF gold.

3. Dubai Market

Gold arrives in Dubai and enters global markets via UAE-based refineries and traders.

4. Procurement & Materiel

Profits finance RSF’s operations and procurement. Weapons and materiel flow back via transnational routes through neighbouring countries and UAE-linked intermediaries.

The Result: RSF commander Hemedti became one of Sudan's richest men through gold smuggling. This wealth finances weapons, salaries, media campaigns, and enables the RSF to continue the war. According to UN experts, "complex financial networks established by RSF before and during the war enabled it to acquire weapons, pay salaries, fund media campaigns, lobby, and buy the support of other political and armed groups."

🇺🇸 The US Connection: American Weapons to UAE

The United States has sold billions of dollars in weapons to the UAE—even as evidence mounted that UAE was arming the RSF.

2024: $1.2 Billion Sale

Biden administration approved sale despite evidence UAE was breaking promises not to arm RSF.

May 2025: $1.4 Billion Sale

Trump administration notified Congress of another massive weapons sale to UAE.

Trump Family Ties

UAE invested $2 billion in Trump family crypto venture, creating massive conflicts of interest.

Congressional Efforts to Stop the Sales

  • Rep. Sara Jacobs & Sen. Chris Van Hollen: Introduced the "Stand Up for Sudan Act" to prohibit US arms sales to UAE until it stops arming RSF
  • Rep. Gregory Meeks (Ranking Member, House Foreign Affairs): Using his position to block major defense sales to UAE. In March 2025, successfully halted US arms sales
  • Bipartisan Support: Multiple Democrats and some Republicans have called for ending weapons sales, but UAE's lobbying power remains strong
The Problem: While the UAE repeatedly assured the US it would not arm Sudan's warring parties, evidence shows continuous violations. British-made equipment, US-made engines, and weapons sold to UAE have all been found in RSF hands. The UAE uses its status as a "strategic ally" to continue receiving American weapons that enable its proxy war in Sudan.
